History of the monument
Built as early as the 12th century on a rocky islet overlooking Lake Geneva, Chillon Castle was successively a strategic fortress, a princely residence, and a control post for alpine trade routes.
Under the authority of the Counts of Savoy, it became one of the major political and military centres of the region. Its vaulted halls, dungeons, and ramparts still bear witness today to several centuries of conflicts, alliances, and feudal life.
